Channeling Roald Dahl

The Big Friendly Giant was one of my favorite books as a kiddo.  To this day, I love the image of Sophie hiding in the BFG's pocket.  I digress. Roald Dahl was a champion of imagination and seeing the good in the most dubious of characters and things (giants? chocolate?).  I know!! My kinda guy.

Roald Dahl from The Twits
Mr. Dahl must have been in my pocket this weekend when I found a tiny kitten taped in a box. He was cold, dirty and sick. His ear is floppy, his nose is scruffy and his legs are skinny. But between you and me, I think he's perfectly lovely.

Meet Oliver (or Olivier if you're fancy)
“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”  - Roald Dahl

Happy Weekend - I'm taking a 40 mile bike ride through the Bronx. Wish me luck!

Magical Moments

My alarm buzzed at 5:51AM this morning.  I know what you're thinking. But I've fallen off the work-out-wagon lately (with noticeable, ummm...results) and so my friend, S and I arranged to hit the gym this morning at the are-you-kidding-me-6:30AM-?! start time.  I don't mind mornings, but 6:30? It hurts. Unless...you get to bike through Prospect Park.

From CityBirder

There's this notorious hill in the park, trust me, it's wicked.  But right when you're (I'm?) about to give up and die, you reach this gentle curve and if you look down to your left, betwixt the hours of 5 & 9AM you might see something pretty magical: dogs running wild and free.  It's one of those things that I never really paid much attention to before. I don't own a dog and living in Brooklyn, you see them all the time - they're everywhere.  But this summer, I went with a friend and her gorgeous dog, Addy to Central Park during off-leash hours and it was breathtaking (and terrifying) to see these animals run and frolic as fast as they can.  And so, I like to think that my reward for the early morning wake-up/miserable incline are playful pups.

Supper Club

Every month, 6 friends and I go to a different restaurant in alphabetical order.  We've been at it for almost 2 years (!) and last night we checked off "W" at The Winslow.  It's a gin joint with delicious food! I had the "Bees Knees" cocktail:
  • Gin
  • Honey
  • Lemon
  • Bee Pollen

And Chicken Curry Pot Pie (in it's own, tiny cast iron skillet)

And then, I saw this adorable (and timely) video on the New York Times homepage today.  Love!

Never. Ever. Ever.

I found out a year ago that one of my friends was diagnosed with colon cancer (!) and as I struggled to find the words to express how sorry I was that this happened but how much hope I had that she would come out of the experience alive and thriving, I felt like the giantest cheeseball ever.  And here’s my deep thought: We live in a culture of cynicism.  Here in NY more than anywhere, right?  But I don’t have to be a part of it.  And THEN I saw this quote and I  was all, "thank you Ryan Adams!"

Oh, and update: One year later, my friend L hasn't lost an ounce of enthusiasm or zest. Love her!

Mobile Fish

I probably spend too much mental energy on my pet goldfish, Goldie Hawn.   Whatever.  It’s healthier than spending that energy on, oh, say, Ebola (boom!).  Plus, she really is super!  Which begs the question, wouldn’t it be great if I could take her with me all the time?

If I were..

When I was little I used to sing this song, I don’t really remember how it starts but one line goes, “If I were a fish in the sea…I’d wiggle my tail and I’d giggle with glee…”

And then I found this:

C'est si bon

I've always loved the song, C'est si bonFor me, falling down a YouTube rabbit hole, listening to different versions of the same song - especially jazz - is one of life's simple joys.  And this tune does not disappoint. It's so good! (Get it?)  I think my favorite version is from:

Right, how great are they?!  *Bonus tap dance? Stop.

But how can you not love, Louis Armstrong?

Dean Martin's irreverence is always charming.

Yves Montand's performance is a bit odd - with the hand and the face. Obviously, I still love it.

And then, I felt like Howard Carter when he discovered King Tut's tomb. Eartha Kitt (!!)
1. Have you seen anyone more glamorous
2. Did you know she was Catwoman
3. How does she make her voice growl like that?

Thank you, internet!

All. Over. The. Place.

Perhaps it's just the shift in weather. Perhaps it's the beginning of my professional "busy season." Perhaps I'm just neurotic and this is to be expected from time to time. Despite the ambiguity of the source, I've definitely been feeling a little crazy lately. Unfocused and all over the place. I guess mixed emotions can be their own brand of lovely, no?

Indecision...

...may or may not be my problem. -Jimmy Buffet

It's true. I am having trouble deciding how to recover my (super cute!) Queen Anne sofa purchased off Craigslist in...JULY(!).
*Note: not my actual sofa (I don't have a picture of it, actually) but you get the idea of the shape.

It definitely needs some love. Don't get me wrong, I have love to give it, but deciding which fabric to use - color, texture, pattern - has become my own personal brand of torture. Because, when you love (almost) everything, narrowing everything down is, umm, tortuous. I know. My life is so hard. Ok. So, my goal is to pick a fabric by the end of this weekend. Eeeep!

Here's what I DO like:
